The Settlement Process

Kurahaupo has been formed by Ngati Apa, Ngati Kuia and Rangitane for the purpose of securing a comprehensive Treaty of Waitangi settlement for our people.

By linking together three Iwi who share history and alliances, Kurahaupo creates powerful momentum for the negotiation of our Treaty of Waitangi settlement, and establishes a foundation on which to build a strong future for Ngati Apa, Ngati Kuia and Rangitane.

The settlement of Treaty of Waitangi claims is a large task, involving many steps and procedural requirements. Up until now Ngati Apa, Ngati Kuia and Rangitane have progressed their claims as individual Iwi. Representatives of each Iwi have presented their evidence of historical grievances against the Crown to individual hearings before the Waitangi Tribunal. These hearings, which were completed in February 2004, identified and defined the claims to be settled and are a significant achievement within the broader settlement process.

Now Ngati Apa, Ngati Kuia and Rangitane have come together as Kurahaupo to undertake the formal negotiation process as a 'large natural grouping' and ultimately achieve a comprehensive settlement for our people.

Kurahaupo has already received Crown approval as a viable grouping for Treaty negotiations. This means that - with the mandate of our people - Kurahaupo will be able to represent the collective interests of Ngati Apa, Ngati Kuia and Rangitane through the remaining stages of the Treaty of Waitangi claim settlement process.

If you are of Ngati Apa, Ngati Kuia or Rangitane descent you are eligible for membership of Kurahaupo, and entitled to benefit from a Kurahaupo settlement. By registering as a member of Kurahaupo you will help to ensure that Kurahaupo represents a strong and united grouping that receives due recognition throughout the claim settlement process.

All existing members registered with the individual Iwi have automatically been placed on the combined register with Kurahaupo. All registrations received for Kurahaupo will be registered with the Iwi you nominate on your registration form.

Throughout  this website you will find information about the Treaty of Waitangi Claim Settlement process and the steps ahead for Kurahaupo. Most importantly the website provides information about registering as a member of Kurahaupo and an enrolment form for you to download and complete. Additional copies of the registration form are available from the Kurahaupo office - Click Here to contact us.
